John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was ordained priest in 1842, eventually being consecrated Anglican bishop of Liverpool in 1880, which office he held till shortly before his death. 'A strong Evangelical in his beliefs, he defended his convictions in forceful and simple language in a number of tracts which had a wide circulation'.
