Author : Rev Peter Bloomfield

Some people find themselves asking ‘How can I know God’s will?’ Peter Bloomfield’s response is ‘there is no point asking if a particular event is according to “the will of God” because that is a very ambiguous term. It has two completely distinct meanings. The right approach to guidance begins by recognising that distinction. God’s will is either revealed or unrevealed.’

The Bible provides principles of conduct that affect every aspect of life, adequately equipping us for every good work. But it must be interpreted correctly. It is all too easy to get wrong guidance out of the Bible because of misreading it.

In Guidance Peter Bloomfield explains the biblical teaching that God has one specific plan for each person’s life, a plan that one’s circumstances and choices fulfil in every detail.

‘Young Christians in particular should be given this book. It will spare them much anguish in trying to reach important decisions — what course of study should I take? Whom should I marry? Where should I buy a house? This book will be welcomed by many and widely used.’ — Allan M. Harman (Emeritus Professor of Old Testament and former principal at the Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne, Victoria)

‘Today there is much confusion between the authority of Scripture and the authority of the church or that of Christian leaders. John Calvin laboured with no such confusion. He pointed out the crucial difference between the apostles and their successors: “The former were sure and genuine scribes of the Holy Spirit, and their writings are therefore to be considered oracles of God; but the sole office of others is to teach what is provided and sealed in the Holy Scriptures.” Peter Bloomfield has sought to apply this necessary insight to some issues raised in modern church life. Hopefully, the result will be greater clarity of thinking, and a more faithful proclamation of gospel truth on the part of the church. This is a most helpful book.’ — Peter Barnes, Minister of Revesby Presbyterian Church in Sydney, Australia

Peter Bloomfield taught at several High Schools in Australia for eight years, then completed a B.D.Hons. degree which led to ordination in the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia in 1982. In 1990 he accepted the call of the Bald Hills Presbyterian Church, North Brisbane, where he still serves. He is married to Lesley and has two daughters and two grandsons.

'For the Christian thinking through the matter of guidance, this book would make a wonderful starting point. There is so much angst amongst Christians on this issue, which easily leads to rationalization and just plain nonsense. It is good to commend a work full of biblical common sense on the subject.'

'Peter Bloomfield encourages Christians to sort wheat from chaff where guidance is concerned. For him, the wheat represents firm principles that can be derived from the Bible, while the chaff represents the subjective feelings that sometimes pass for guidance in the evangelical world.'

'The book is full of good everyday and Biblical illustrations throughout and at the end of each chapter there are questions to stimulate further thought. I feel this is an excellent read for any Christian looking for God’s direction.'

'Full marks to Evangelical Press for publishing this important book — much overdue in the UK.'

'Peter Bloomfield argues that the Bible provides all the guidance necessary to make any decision in life in this well-written book.'

'The chapter on "Guidance Gone Mad" reveals just how alarming things can get, and shows what a real need there is to put this excellent book in the hands especially of young Christians. They will be thankful for its wise and helpful guidance.'

'Life is complex and there are no easy answers, but this book is valuable and should be read by anyone seeking help in this vital area of our Christian life. Thoroughly recommended.'

'For the writer, the only guide to God’s will is the word of God and he positively asserts that it is wrong to look for guidance in conjunction with anything else whether they be events, open doors, or in ‘laying out fleeces’ as Gideon did'.

"So much evangelical writing on the subject of guidance is steeped in mysticism.  By contrast, Peter Bloomfield's little book is a breath of fresh air.  It offers thoroughgoing biblical common sense throughout  in no-nonsense style with bags of relevant, contemporary illustrations and applications.  I commend it highly.  In fact I felt like cheering on nearly every page."
